That afternoon Mark wandered a few feet off the path toward a patch of loose dirt near the grass. I barely noticed at first\u2014until he crouched down, dug both hands into the mud, and pulled something out.<\/p>\n
When he turned around holding it, my stomach tightened.<\/p>\n
It was an old teddy bear.<\/p>\n
Its fur was caked with dirt. One eye was missing. The stuffing looked lumpy and uneven like it had been buried a long time. My first reaction was immediate.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo way,\u201d I told him. \u201cThat\u2019s filthy. Leave it there.\u201d<\/p>\n
