This year marks the 10th anniversary of friends Dench and Hinton meeting for Thanksgiving and capturing the hearts of millions<\/p>\n

Ten years ago, an accidental text from a grandmother in Mesa, Arizona, to a teenager she\u2019d never met sparked one of the internet\u2019s most viral holiday traditions.<\/p>\n

What should have been a forgettable mix-up instead bloomed into an annual Thanksgiving reunion \u2014 and a friendship that has carried both Wanda Dench and Jamal Hinton through loss, new beginnings and some of life\u2019s most unexpected blessings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it was fate,\u201d Dench said while speaking exclusively with PEOPLE. \u201cAll the signs beforehand just fell into place. I feel every day I\u2019m grateful and blessed because I would’ve never met somebody as wonderful as Jamal just randomly like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, the longtime friends celebrated the 10-anniversary of their meeting with a partnership with Green Giant, as the brand celebrates its 100th anniversary. \u201cPartnering with them for our 10th year makes this even more special,\u201d Hinton said, to which Dench agreed, \u201cSharing our 10th year \u2014 alongside Green Giant\u2019s 100th anniversary \u2014 makes this holiday feel especially meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their friendship, remaining strong over the years, organically became a symbol for chosen family and has inspired millions year over year. For some, the holiday season begins with Mariah Carey\u2019s first high note. For others, it begins the moment Hinton and Dench reappear on their feeds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing every year,\u201d Hinton said kindly. \u201cPeople get so excited to see us. As a kid, I always dreamed of being famous, so to know our story brings joy to people \u2014 it means everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dench admitted the attention once made her nervous. \u201cI used to think people might get tired of us hogging up the news,\u201d she said with a laugh. \u201cBut every time someone says the kindest thing, I\u2019m reminded that we bring joy. That\u2019s worth everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, after a decade, their friendship has deepened well beyond one viral dinner table. They\u2019ve shown up for birthdays, familial celebrations, even tattoo appointments \u2014 and some of the hardest moments imaginable.<\/p>\n

When Dench\u2019s husband, Lonnie, died from COVID complications in 2020, Hinton and his then-girlfriend drove to her home, leaving a basket at her door due to social distancing. \u201cI think of him every day,\u201d Dench shared of her late husband. \u201cHis spirit is always with us.\u201d Hinton honors Lonnie publicly each November, to keep him included in the tradition he was also a major part of. \u201cI never want the world to forget him,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Dench faced another challenge \u2014 a breast cancer diagnosis she originally planned to keep private. But she realized her platform could help other women her age stay on top of screenings. Hinton reshared her message on his own account \u2014 her original page had been hacked \u2014 and it spread instantly. \u201cNow I\u2019m cancer-free,\u201d she said proudly.<\/p>\n

This year, the Thanksgiving marathon belongs to Dench. With multiple gatherings on both sides of the family, she jokes she\u2019ll be \u201cdriving all over the place.\u201d Hinton remembers the feeling well. His first year with the Denches included six dinners in one day, capped by a visit to his sick grandmother in the hospital. \u201cIt was crazy,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

Food-wise, they already know exactly what they\u2019re looking forward to. For Dench, it\u2019s turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie with generous whipped cream. For Hinton: \u201cRed meat. Steaks or prime rib and baked mac-and-cheese.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although a once-considered Netflix film about their story was recently shelved, both insist their doors aren\u2019t closed. \u201cMaybe something will come up in the future,\u201d Dench added.<\/p>\n

For now, they\u2019re focused on their own next chapters. Newly retired, the happy grandma is searching for her next passion \u2014 \u201cmaybe volunteer work, maybe a part-time job on my own terms,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n

Hinton is juggling a slate of projects: launching a car-accident law group, expanding his youth suicide-prevention nonprofit, coaching basketball and supporting behavioral health programs with his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy life is pretty jam-packed,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I love it. I\u2019m helping people, and I feel like that\u2019s what I was put on this planet to do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
