The mother of 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos, who is set to die by euthanasia today, made a final plea to save her daughter\u2019s life.
\nIt\u2019s a tragic story, and one that could come to a sad end today.
\nNoelia Castillo Ramos has had a tragic and short life
\nThe 25-year-old has been the victim of three rapes, once by an ex-boyfriend and a gang rape by three boys in 2022, after which she tried to end her own life.
\nShe jumped from the fifth storey of a building in October 2022 after previously overdosing on medication, according to legal documents.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t die from the fall but was left paraplegic, and has been experiencing severe chronic pain that leaves her with no possibility for improvement in her quality of life, according to her medical records.<\/p>\n
Noelia, who is from Barcelona in Spain, has wanted to die for some time and has been \u2018very clear\u2019 about her intentions.<\/p>\n
From a care home in Barcelona she said: \u201cNone of my family is in favour of euthanasia. But what about all the pain I\u2019ve suffered during all these years,<\/p>\n
\u201cThe happiness of a father, a mother, or a sister cannot be more important than the life of a daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even before she put in her request to be allowed to die, she admits that she had \u2018always felt alone\u2019 and \u2018saw my world as very dark\u2019.<\/p>\n
The pain makes everything \u2018very difficult\u2019 for her and there is no hope for her to improve.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Spanish TV show Y Ahora Sonsoles, Noelia said: \u201cI want to go now in peace and stop suffering, period.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noelia\u2019s parents have made objections to the decision
\nNoelia\u2019s father filed a legal objection to her request to be allowed euthanasia in 2024, claiming her judgment was not sound, and said that the state had an obligation \u2018to protect the lives of people, especially the most vulnerable\u2019.<\/p>\n
He and his team also argued that Noelia changed her mind about dying a few times.<\/p>\n
Still, a judge ruled in her favor and said they had seen \u2018no evidence of a scientific or expert character has been presented to contradict the many medical reports which support the decision [to end her life]\u2019.<\/p>\n
There have also been appeals made by Noelia\u2019s mom, who has begged her daughter to reconsider.<\/p>\n
Yolanda Ramos told Spanish media that she hopes her daughter will change her mind at the last minute, but said she will remain by her side \u2018until the very end\u2019.<\/p>\n
She also revealed an anonymous letter had been received asking if a donor could give money to help the situation.<\/p>\n
Yolanda read that letter, which said: \u201c[Translated from Spanish] I know it\u2019s last-minute, but is there any amount of money or support I can offer directly to Noelia and her family to help her postpone her decision?<\/p>\n
\u201cPerhaps with a very significant amount of money and support, she could start rebuilding her life little by little.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m willing to offer everything within my power so she can receive the physical and psychological help she needs, no matter the cost.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the meantime, tell her I have a large apartment and two cars, and I\u2019m also willing to pay for rent in Barcelona for her and her mother, as well as psychological and psychiatric help.\u201d<\/p>\n
Addressing her daughter directly, Yolanda said: \u201cTherapists for you, Noelia. These are my final words if you\u2019re watching me, just in case. Just in case you want to.<\/p>\n
\u201cHonestly, to hear me \u2013 because I know you\u2019re watching me. The last thing I can do for you is help you come to terms with it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you can come to terms with it, without anyone taking that euthanasia away from you \u2013 if you can come to terms with it, and you want to do it, I\u2019m here with you. Just as I\u2019ll be there for the bad times, I\u2019ll also be there for the very good times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noelia\u2019s tragic final interview
\nDespite these pleas from those closest to her, Noelia has no plans to change her mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cNone of my family is in favor. I am a pillar of the family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am leaving them suffering. But what about my suffering?\u201d<\/p>\n
She said that she wants to \u2018die looking pretty\u2019 and will wear her prettiest dress and make-up before the procedure.<\/p>\n
She claims she has invited her family to say goodbye, but ultimately wants to be alone in her care home room when she dies.<\/p>\n
She will have four pictures with her at the time, one of her painting a portrait of her mother, another of a childhood pet, one from her first day of school, and another from her childhood to remind her of \u2018happy\u2019 times in her life.<\/p>\n

The law in Spain regarding euthanasia
\nSpain legalized voluntary euthanasia and assisted dying for citizens five years ago, so long as the criteria are met.<\/p>\n
Voluntary euthanasia refers to adults being administered a lethal injection by a doctor, whereas assisted dying is prescription of drugs to a terminally ill person to be administered by the person themselves.<\/p>\n
Only those with \u2018serious and incurable\u2019 conditions that cause \u2018unbearable suffering\u2019 can be eligible.<\/p>\n
They must also prove that they can give informed consent to the decision.<\/p>\n
