A nine-year-old was brutally drowned in filthy marsh water by her coffee CEO father during a trip to upstate New York, prosecutors said at his murder trial.<\/p>\n
Melina Frattolin\u2019s lifeless body was discovered in July 2025 near Eagle Lake in Ticonderoga. Her lungs, airway and stomach were filled with mud, debris and plants from the marsh, experts testified.<\/p>\n
Melina\u2019s father Luciano Frattolin, 45, has been charged with her murder and pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege he hatched the murder plan as part of a twisted scheme to avoid paying child support.<\/p>\n
As jurors were forced to view gruesome images of his daughter\u2019s body, Frattolin averted his gaze.<\/p>\n
The father, who is the founder of coffee company Gambella, was also seen scribbling furiously on a legal notepad as prosecutors brought forward evidence in court.<\/p>\n
Medical examiner Dr Michael Sikirica told the court Melina was found covered in a \u2018large amount of mud\u2019 in knee-deep marsh waters, describing her death as \u2018definitely a drowning case.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018The lungs were just full of black material, basically mud and plant debris,\u2019 Sikirica said. \u2018It was obvious quickly that her lungs were hyper expanded,\u2019 Sikirica testified, adding that her remains appeared to be weighted down by a stone in the water.<\/p>\n
The testimony came days after it emerged that Melina had begged her mother not to send her on a previously planned trip with her father to his homeland of Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

When Melina was reported missing by her father on July 19, 2025, Frattolin claimed that she had been kidnapped by two men in a white van as they traveled back home to Canada from New York.<\/p>\n
New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Investigator Daniel Mauro testified that he interrogated Luciano for 13 hours after he reported his daughter was missing.<\/p>\n
Mauro said the coffee CEO changed his story about changing his clothes, at first saying he did not and then admitting he changed his shirt because he \u2018was sweaty.\u2019<\/p>\n
The investigator said inconsistencies in the story alerted cops, who believed Frattolin changed his clothes because he had been wading in the marsh.<\/p>\n
Frattolin\u2019s wet clothes were allegedly later found in a trash bag discarded along Interstate 87, the route where he had been driving Melina back to her mother in Montreal, reports the Press Republican.<\/p>\n
Partial footage of Mauro\u2019s interrogation of Frattolin was displayed to jurors, showing the moment the investigator told the father he did not believe his story about Melina being \u2018kidnapped.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018You know something you haven\u2019t told us,\u2019 Mauro told Frattolin.<\/p>\n
When Melina was reported missing by her father on July 19, 2025, her father claimed that she had been kidnapped by two men in a white van as they traveled back home to Canada from New York<\/p>\n
Frattolin has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and concealment of a corpse<\/p>\n
Frattolin claimed his daughter was taken by two men in a van when he pulled over by the side of the highway to urinate, alleging that she was snatched as he turned his back.<\/p>\n
But during his police interrogation, another investigator told Frattolin that they had cell phone data placing him near the scene where Melina was found.<\/p>\n
The father insisted: \u2018I\u2019m not lying.\u2019<\/p>\n
Earlier on Tuesday, Melina\u2019s mother Kali Galanis took the stand, where she told jurors that Frattolin\u2019s trip to New York with their daughter came after he unsuccessfully tried to take her on vacation to his native Ethiopia.<\/p>\n
The trip to Ethiopia had been planned for January 2025, but Galanis did not allow her daughter to go after Melina told her she did not want to.<\/p>\n
Galanis and Frattolin were separated, and she said she had become concerned about Frattolin\u2019s plans to travel overseas with Melina as her lawyer mentioned cases in which estranged spouses take their children to other countries and refuse to return with them.<\/p>\n
The worried mother also noted there were other \u2018troubling and alarming things\u2019 that the young girl told her that her father said about her unwillingness to travel to the east African nation that Galanis ultimately decided not to allow Melina to go.<\/p>\n
\u2018I became uncomfortable,\u2019 she explained as Frattolin\u2019s murder trial continued. \u2018I was not OK with that anymore.\u2019<\/p>\n
Melina\u2019s mother said she sent her this picture just hours before she was allegedly murdered<\/p>\n
Frattolin compromised with taking Melina to New York instead, where he allegedly drowned her as they drove back to Canada.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors argue that the trip was just a ploy to kill Melina so that he would no longer have to pay child support.<\/p>\n
Frattolin also allegedly believed that both Galanis and Melina suffered from mental illness and had been planning since early 2025 to end her suffering, CBS6 Albany reports.<\/p>\n
