The apartment was always quiet in the mornings, and it almost always smelled like instant coffee and toast. I was seventeen, almost done with high school, and that small kitchen was still the safest place I knew.<\/p>\n
My grandpa, Walter, hummed something old while he packed my lunch into a brown paper bag.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeanut butter again, kiddo,\u201d he said, folding the top of the bag neatly. \u201cDon\u2019t tell anyone I\u2019m a fancy chef.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few weeks before graduation, our principal announced that the school would hold an awards assembly. Several students were chosen to give speeches about teachers and staff members who had influenced them.<\/p>\n
