The Wedding Dress

I laughed.

“Fine. But you’re responsible for it. If anything happens, I’m coming after you.”

Hannah hugged me so tightly I almost dropped the garment bag.

“You’re the best.”

The next morning, she picked it up.

I watched her drive away with my dress hanging carefully in the back seat.

That was the last normal moment.

Two weeks later, on a Saturday afternoon, I was scrolling through Facebook when I saw a photograph that made my stomach drop.

Hannah.

Standing beside Ben.

Smiling.

Wearing my wedding dress.

Not posing for a casual couple’s photo shoot.

Not standing in a studio.

She was standing beneath an arch covered in white flowers.

Guests surrounded her.

Ben was wearing a tuxedo.

And above them was a sign that read:

“The Wedding of Hannah & Ben.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Then I zoomed in.

There was no mistake.

That was my dress.

The lace sleeves.

The pearl buttons.

Even the tiny alteration near the waist that I had paid to have done before my own wedding.

I called Hannah immediately.

She didn’t answer.

I called Ben.

Nothing.

Then another thought hit me.

The venue.

If the wedding was happening right now, I could get there in twenty minutes.

I grabbed my keys.

I didn’t even know what I was going to say.

I only knew I needed answers.

When I arrived, cars filled the parking lot.

Music drifted through the open doors.

I walked inside and immediately saw people staring at me.

Then Hannah appeared at the end of the hallway.

She was still wearing my dress.

Her face went completely white.

“Hannah,” I said.

“What is going on?”

She looked around nervously.

Then she rushed toward me and grabbed my arm.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

I pulled away.

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because if you came here for the truth…”

She glanced toward the ballroom.

“…you need to hear it before you see him.”

“See who?”

Hannah swallowed hard.

“Your husband.”

I froze.

“My husband died six years ago.”

“I know.”

She squeezed my hand.

“That’s why I need you to stay calm.”

I stared at her.

“What does my husband have to do with your wedding?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she pointed toward a closed door at the end of the hall.

“Go inside.”

My hands were shaking as I opened it.

And there, sitting at a table covered with old photographs, letters, and documents, was the one person I never expected to see again.

My husband’s mother.

She looked up at me.

Then she said six words that changed everything:

“Your husband never died six years ago.”

I couldn’t speak.

She pushed a photograph across the table.

It showed my husband standing beside another woman.

A newborn baby was in his arms.

And on the back of the photograph was a date.

A date from three years after my supposed widowhood.

Then she whispered:

“Hannah didn’t borrow your wedding dress for a photo shoot.”

“She wore it because tonight was supposed to be the wedding he promised her.”

I looked toward the ballroom.

The music had stopped.

And suddenly, I understood why everyone had been staring at me.

Because somewhere inside that building was the man I had buried in my heart for six years.

And he was alive.
