For anyone who grew up watching the gritty, larger-than-life spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s and ’70s, he was a familiar face.

The American actor, who found fame far from Hollywood, has died at the age of 90.

According to producer and longtime friend Joan Borsten, Harrison died Friday of natural causes in Los Angeles.

Born in Salt Lake City on May 26, 1936, Harrison arrived in Hollywood at just 17, determined to make a name for himself. Before landing his first acting roles, he worked at gyms owned by bodybuilders Vic Tanny and Bert Goodrich and even modeled for beefcake magazines.

He later trained as an actor under renowned teacher Sandy Meisner at Fox, which helped him begin building a career with small roles in films such as Kronos, Jeanne Eagels, Too Much, Too Soon, South Pacific and Tall Story.

But it was overseas, particularly in Europe, where Harrison found the kind of career that would make him recognizable to generations of Western fans. During the height of the spaghetti Western era, he appeared in a number of films that showcased his rugged screen presence and ability to play tough, memorable characters.

While Hollywood was producing its own version of the American West, European filmmakers were creating a darker, more stylized interpretation of the genre. Harrison became part of that movement, working alongside international casts and crews and building a reputation that extended well beyond the United States.

His career was not limited to Westerns. Over the years, he continued appearing in films and television productions, taking on a variety of supporting roles and remaining active in the entertainment industry.

For fans, however, it was those dusty landscapes, gunfighters and unforgettable Western stories that made Harrison especially memorable.

His journey from a teenager arriving in Hollywood to an actor who found lasting recognition in European Western cinema was anything but ordinary.

Harrison leaves behind a career spanning decades and a body of work that continues to remind audiences of a distinctive era in movie history.

For those who remember the classic Westerns of the 1960s and ’70s, his passing marks the loss of another familiar face from a bygone generation of cinema.
