But I knew my grandmother.<\/p>\n

She wasn’t going to make a scene on an airplane.<\/p>\n

So I sat there, furious, while Rose made herself smaller.<\/p>\n

For the first few minutes, neither of us said much.<\/p>\n

A flight attendant noticed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve been watching this,\u201d he said. \u201cThat’s not her seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone else agreed.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, the woman realized that everyone around her had noticed what she was doing.<\/p>\n

She moved back into her own space.<\/p>\n

Rose straightened her cardigan.<\/p>\n

And then she did something that completely disarmed me.<\/p>\n
