The man left without saying anything else.

I stared at the number he had written on his clipboard long after he drove away.

$214.

That night, I sat at the kitchen table with the bill in front of me while my husband, Mark, washed dishes.

“There has to be something wrong,” I said.

He dried his hands and looked at me.

“I know.”

“Maybe we should call a plumber.”

He hesitated.

“Tomorrow.”

I should have noticed the hesitation.

Instead, I went to bed.

The next afternoon, I came home early because my daughter had forgotten her lunch.

As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed something strange.

Our next-door neighbor, Greg, was crouched beside our outdoor faucet.

At first, I thought he was fixing something.

Then I saw the hose.

It was connected to our faucet and disappeared through the gap beneath the fence.

Water was running.

I sat in my car, completely still.

Greg looked around once before turning the valve.

Then he dragged the hose back toward his yard.

My heart started pounding.

I grabbed my phone and stepped out of the car.

I was already walking toward his front door when my husband texted me.

DON’T LET HIM KNOW YOU SAW.

I stopped.

I stared at the message.

Then another one appeared.

Come inside. Now.

I walked into our house and found Mark standing in the hallway.

“Why did you tell me not to confront him?”

He looked pale.

“Because I knew.”

I couldn’t speak.

“Knew what?”

Mark lowered his voice.

“I noticed the hose a few weeks ago.”

My stomach dropped.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I thought I could handle it.”

“Handle what, Mark?”

He pulled out his phone and showed me several photographs.

Greg’s hose.

Our faucet.

His backyard.

And a water meter reading.

“He’s been doing this for months,” Mark said.

I stared at the pictures.

“How did you get these?”

“I followed the hose one morning.”

Then he said something that made everything worse.

“He isn’t the only one.”

That evening, we called the city again.

This time, we showed them the photographs.

A technician came the next morning.

He inspected our meter while someone else checked the line.

Then he followed the hose beneath the fence.

The truth was finally obvious.

Our water wasn’t disappearing because of a leak.

Someone had been taking it.

But the city couldn’t simply charge Greg for every gallon without proof.

So we installed a small camera facing our faucet.

Two nights later, at 1:17 a.m., Greg came outside.

He connected the hose.

The camera caught everything.

The city was contacted again, and this time there was no arguing about whether we had imagined it.

Greg eventually admitted he had been using our water to fill his swimming pool and water his garden.

He claimed he thought the faucet was shared.

It wasn’t.

The final bill came a few weeks later.

The city reviewed our usage and adjusted part of the charges after confirming the unauthorized connection.

Our water bill went back to $61.

I wish I could say the story ended with Greg apologizing.

He didn’t.

He moved a few months later.

But the experience taught me something I’ll never forget.

Sometimes the problem isn’t hidden inside your house.

Sometimes it’s coming through the fence.

And sometimes the person who knows exactly what’s happening isn’t the neighbor you suspect.

It’s the person standing beside you, telling you to stay quiet.

The man left without saying anything else.
