A married couple returned to the hotel where they had spent their honeymoon, forty years on, to celebrate their anniversary. But at check-in, the receptionist greeted the husband by name as a returning guest and mentioned he usually asked for the same room — unsettling his wife, who believed they had not been there in four decades. The husband denied any recent visits, and the day ended with an uneasy silence between them.

The next day, the wife questioned the receptionist, who refused to share the husband’s booking history but let slip that he had asked her that very morning not to discuss his previous visits. Then a waiter slipped the wife a note: her husband had been coming to the hotel for about two years with a young woman in her early twenties, booking the room under his name but never staying overnight himself. Convinced it was an affair, the wife confronted him — and he finally confessed the truth.

Before he had met his wife, he had dated another woman who became pregnant without telling him. That child, a son, had died three years earlier at forty-one, and the son’s daughter had found the husband online, with a DNA test confirming the relationship. For two years he had met this newly discovered granddaughter at the hotel, eight times in all, keeping it secret from his wife out of fear of how she would react.

The next morning the granddaughter arrived to meet the wife, having believed she already knew. The wife was furious — not at the granddaughter’s existence, but at the secrecy. The couple cut their trip short, and the wife does not yet know whether she will forgive her husband, but she plans to keep in touch with the granddaughter and refuses to let her lose another family member.
