A father went to the motor vehicle office to renew his driver’s licence, accompanied by his young daughter. His wife was recovering from three surgeries after breaking her leg, so she could not come. He describes being exhausted — caring for his wife, managing household expenses and looking after his daughter, barely sleeping properly in weeks. When his daughter urgently needed the bathroom, the family restroom had an out-of-order sign on its door, and the men’s restroom had a broken lock on its only stall. So he checked that the women’s restroom was empty and took his daughter inside.

A woman inside shouted at him to get out, saying he did not belong there. His daughter grabbed his leg and began crying. He explained, but the woman refused to listen, questioned why his wife wasn’t caring for their daughter, and dismissed his wife’s medical condition when he explained it. His daughter asked if she had done something wrong. A security guard arrived, and the woman demanded he remove the father. Instead, the guard addressed the woman: security cameras had captured something unusual near the family restroom.

The footage showed the woman herself placing the out-of-order sign on a restroom that was functioning perfectly. She was not an ordinary visitor but the office’s customer service manager, responsible for helping families and maintaining accessibility. In a meeting with her supervisor, she admitted she disliked dealing with parents and young children in the building, and the supervisor disclosed earlier complaints about her behaviour. The father explained how frightened his daughter was and the family’s existing strain — medical appointments, insurance paperwork — and the supervisor placed the woman on administrative leave pending investigation, ordered the misleading sign removed, ordered repairs to the men’s restroom, and apologised personally.

Before leaving, the supervisor arranged for the father’s licence renewal to be completed without another long wait. A friendly employee gave his daughter a colourful butterfly sticker; she watched the sign being removed and asked to show her sticker to Mummy. The father reflects that he needed only a safe place to help his daughter when she couldn’t wait, and that her excitedly describing her sticker to her mother that afternoon reminded him sometimes the smallest kindness can make an enormous difference.
