Irish athletics star Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34, just weeks after marrying her longtime partner, Thomas Moran.<\/p>\n
The European 1,500-meter champion passed away over the weekend after living with stage 4 bowel cancer. She publicly confirmed her diagnosis in May 2025.<\/p>\n
Her death was announced in a statement shared on her Instagram account Sunday, November 1.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend, and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The message ended with the Irish blessing \u2018Ar dheis D\u00e9 go raibh a hanam\u2019, meaning \u2018May her soul be at the right hand of God\u2019.<\/p>\n
Following her diagnosis, Mageean spoke openly about the emotional toll of her illness. During an appearance on BBC\u2019s GAA Social, she admitted that \u2018sometimes it gets a little harder to hold on to the hope,\u2019 according to the Mirror.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen I pick myself up, and I shake myself off and remind myself there\u2019s always some hope, so commence a new batch of treatment, continue to look forward to the things that I\u2019m hoping to look forward to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
But despite being sick, she was determined to experience her wedding.<\/p>\n
\u201cMyself and Thomas are getting married in October. I\u2019m not going to let this cancer get in the way of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
She and Moran married in October, according to Tyla. The couple celebrated with a beautiful ceremony at Darver Castle Estate, followed by a smaller civil ceremony in Belfast.<\/p>\n

From representing Ireland at two Olympic Games to winning European Championship gold in Rome in 2024, Ciara demonstrated extraordinary talent, determination and dedication.\u201d<\/p>\n
O\u2019Neill also emphasized that Mageean\u2019s influence went far beyond her medals and athletic records.<\/p>\n
