The post came as Democrats celebrated major victories in the midterm elections, leaving Trump facing the prospect of a Congress controlled by the opposing party.<\/p>\n
And while the president offered no explanation alongside the image, the word on the hat may have given followers a clue about what he has in mind.<\/p>\n
Shared unexpected message on Truth Social
\nOn Wednesday, November 4, Donald Trump gave reporters a closer look at his ambitious White House ballroom project.<\/p>\n
The planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom, announced in July 2025, is expected to accommodate 650 seated guests and was initially estimated to cost around $200 million. It is being built on the site of the former East Wing.<\/p>\n
During the tour, Trump praised the marble selected for the floor, saying, \u201dThe marble is really magnificent marble.\u201d He also described his plans for the interior, telling reporters, \u201dNow envision chandeliers all over.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also defended the project by explaining why he wanted it built.<\/p>\n
\u201dI\u2019m doing it because the White House is the ultimate symbol of America and it\u2019s got to be pristine \u2014 it\u2019s got to be perfect,\u201d he said. \u201dAnd if you take a look at it, that\u2019s what it is right now. You have no idea how much work we had to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump added that presidents had wanted a White House ballroom for 150 years, and described his plans for the finished space.<\/p>\n
Perhaps the tour offered a welcome distraction after the major loss Republicans suffered in this year\u2019s midterm elections, a significant setback for Trump and his party.<\/p>\n
But the story may not be over just yet. At least, that\u2019s what Trump appeared to suggest the day before he walked reporters through the construction site at the White House.<\/p>\n
Looked similar to Trump\u2019s red hats
\nBecause on November 3, Trump posted a photograph on Truth Social showing a red baseball cap against a plain white background.<\/p>\n
It looked similar to the red hats associated with his political campaigns, but there was one noticeable difference. Instead of his familiar campaign slogan, the cap featured the word \u201cVETO\u201d in large white letters.<\/p>\n
The post came amid a difficult election night for Republicans, with Democrats securing victories that shifted the balance of power in Congress.<\/p>\n
The results appeared to leave Trump preparing for a very different political landscape when the new Congress takes office in January.
\nEarlier that night, Trump had also suggested he intended to speak out about the candidates who had lost.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Miranda Devine on the New York Post\u2019s Pod Force One podcast, Trump was asked about the possibility of Democrats taking control of Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201dWell, if that happens, I guess um I\u2019ll become Mr. Veto,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
He has also made it clear that he would be prepared to reject legislation sent to him by a Democratic-led Congress.<\/p>\n
\u201dThey\u2019ll send over things that are insane and I\u2019ll veto them,\u201d he told Fox News after the Republican losses.<\/p>\n
Trump suggested that repeated vetoes could eventually bring both sides to the negotiating table. He said Democrats might eventually ask how they could get things done, adding that \u201dwe\u2019ll work together.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president\u2019s comments offer some context for the photograph, although he has not confirmed that the hat was intended as a direct response to the election results.<\/p>\n
What does presidential veto power actually mean?
\nA presidential veto allows the president to reject a bill passed by Congress before it becomes law.<\/p>\n
Under Article I, Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution, the president can return a bill to Congress with objections rather than signing it.<\/p>\n
Congress does, however, have a way to overcome that decision. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate must approve the legislation again by a two-thirds majority.<\/p>\n
There is also something known as a pocket veto. This can occur when the president receives a bill near the end of a congressional session and Congress adjourns before the president can return it. Unlike an ordinary veto, a pocket veto cannot be overridden.<\/p>\n
Even without the president\u2019s approval, a Democratic-led Congress would still have other important powers, including holding investigations, issuing subpoenas and exercising influence over federal spending.<\/p>\n
