My mom left when I was still a newborn.
\nBut my dad, who was only 19, chose to stay.
\nMy name is Joey, and I was born with Down syndrome.<\/p>\n
He had no idea how to raise a child on his own, but he learned everything step by step.
\nWe moved in with my grandparents so he could have some help while figuring things out.
\nHe took me to every appointment, every therapy session.
\nHe learned how to help me speak, read, and do things at my own pace.<\/p>\n
While people his age were going out or starting their careers, he spent his days with me, practicing those small\u2013big things that for us were victories.<\/p>\n
Now I\u2019m an adult, and we\u2019re still incredibly close.
\nWe cook together, laugh, listen to music.
\nAnd every day I wake up grateful that he stayed.
\nGrateful that he chose me.
\nBecause without him, I wouldn\u2019t be who I am.<\/p>\n
