A grandmother’s simple dryer-cleaning method shows that basic home maintenance doesn’t always require expensive equipment or professional help. Lint that builds up inside a dryer vent can restrict airflow, make clothes take longer to dry, increase energy use, and create a serious fire hazard.
The method uses just three basic tools: a vacuum with a hose, a flexible vent brush, and a leaf blower. Before starting, unplug the dryer and carefully move it away from the wall. Vacuum around the dryer’s vent opening to remove loose lint and dust, then insert the flexible brush to loosen debris deeper inside the vent.
After brushing, vacuum the area again to remove the loosened lint. The final step is to use a leaf blower from outside the home to help push remaining debris through the vent line. Taking these steps can clear blockages that may be difficult to reach with a vacuum alone.
