Melanie Griffith shows off new look after dissolving fillers as cosmetic work went “too far”

But beneath the glamour, the 69-year-old actress has been remarkably candid about something much more intimate: the pressure she experienced over her appearance, and what happened when cosmetic procedures began changing the way she viewed herself.

Melanie Griffith has always reminded me somewhat of Marilyn Monroe — not because they were physically similar, but because of something in the way they presented themselves. There was a warmth, vulnerability, and charm in her manner that made her unforgettable.

I’ve enjoyed her in countless movies over the years, but Shining Through with Michael Douglas has always been one of my favorites. Watching her take on the role of a woman going undercover during wartime, she brought something entirely different to the screen — and it remains a performance I have never forgotten.

Born in Manhattan to actress Tippi Hedren, Griffith spent much of her childhood growing up in Los Angeles, surrounded by Hollywood from a very young age. She graduated from the Hollywood Professional School when she was only 16, after already spending much of her childhood in the public eye.

And, as everyone knows, Hollywood can be among the most appearance-focused places in the world. The pressure to maintain a particular look can be relentless, and in Tinseltown, outward appearance can sometimes seem to receive far more attention than what exists beneath the surface.

Melanie Griffith is among the many actresses who have experienced the intense pressure to maintain a youthful appearance in Hollywood.

During her 50s, Griffith began using fillers in an attempt to reduce the visible signs of aging. However, as time passed, the changes in her appearance became increasingly noticeable, prompting reactions from fans — some concerned, while others were considerably less compassionate.

The remarks could be extremely cruel.

One person described their reaction in especially harsh language: “The physical transformation this woman went through is staggering. From one of the most beautiful women on the big screen to… I have no idea what the hell she turned into.”

Yet behind the headlines and vicious comments was a deeply personal struggle. Griffith eventually acknowledged that she had become unhappy with some of the cosmetic procedures she had undergone — and ultimately decided that she wanted to begin reversing them.

“I hated that thing…”
In 2017, Griffith spoke openly about her first experiences with cosmetic injections, explaining that she began using them around 2010 because she wanted to soften the signs of aging.

“I hated that thing that was happening [to me],” she told Porter.

However, what initially began as an effort to combat the effects of getting older eventually went further than she had intended. Griffith admitted that she did not realize how significantly her appearance had changed until other people started drawing attention to it.

“I didn’t until people started saying: ‘Oh my God, what has she done?’” she revealed.

Looking back, the Working Girl actress acknowledged that the reactions surrounding her appearance had caused her considerable pain. Griffith also found it difficult to understand how the results had become so extreme. At one stage, she even questioned whether she had suffered an allergic reaction to the substance that had been injected.

“Somebody put this ridiculous stuff in and I think I must have been allergic to it,” she said.

Between 2014 and 2015, after facing such intense reactions to her appearance, Griffith decided she had reached the point where some of the cosmetic work needed to be reversed. She consulted another doctor, who began dissolving the fillers.

“He started dissolving all of this sh*t that this other woman doctor put in. I had it done to my lips too. So awful!” she shared.

Griffith’s decision to dissolve the fillers came during an especially challenging chapter of her personal life, around the period when her marriage to Antonio Banderas was ending. Griffith, 69, and Banderas, 66, had been married for almost two decades before divorcing in 2014. They have one daughter together, 29-year-old Stella.

“Hopefully, I look more normal now”
After everything she had experienced, Griffith expressed her hopes for the reversal in only a few simple words:

“Hopefully, I look more normal now.”

Once the fillers had been dissolved, Griffith made it clear that she was not seeking another dramatic change. For the actress, it represented a turning point after spending decades working in an industry where appearance can feel nearly impossible to escape.

She simply wanted to feel more like herself once again.

“Hopefully, I look more normal now,” she said.

Battle with skin cancer
Griffith has also spoken openly about another experience that changed her perspective on her appearance: her battle with skin cancer.

In 2018, she posted a bare-faced photograph on Instagram showing a bandage covering her nose after undergoing dermabrasion as part of treatment following the removal of basal cell skin cancer.

“Bandaged again after having dermabrasion, the final step to fix the now removed basil cell skin cancer,” Griffith wrote.

However, she was not merely giving followers a look at her own recovery.

She used the opportunity to warn her followers about excessive sun exposure, encouraging people to protect their skin, use sunscreen, and have their skin checked regularly.

“be CAREFUL,” she wrote, urging anyone who did not have a dermatologist to find one or visit a clinic for testing.

Focusing on her health
After years of openly discussing the pressure she experienced regarding her appearance, Melanie Griffith now appears to be directing her attention toward something very different: her health, happiness, and simply feeling comfortable in her own skin.

The 69-year-old actress recently offered fans a glimpse into her new wellness-centered lifestyle, posting a collection of photographs from a luxury health retreat in Austria — and she appeared happier and more relaxed than ever.

Griffith shared images from her stay at VIVAMAYR Maria Wörth, a wellness retreat located along Austria’s Lake Wörthersee, where she spent several weeks participating in what she described as a personal “health reset.”

In one photograph, Griffith rested in the sunshine while wearing a black one-piece swimsuit. In another, she stood on a boat wearing the same swimsuit with denim shorts, appearing completely relaxed.

She also showed part of her active routine, including a yoga session while dressed in a bright pink sports bra and matching leggings.

But the trip was more than simply a vacation.

Griffith said she participated in the retreat’s signature “Cure” program, a medically supervised wellness and detox treatment centered on nutrition, movement, and recovery.

For the actress, the experience appeared to be about pressing the reset button and dedicating some time to herself.

“My ‘health reset’ gave me the chance to truly recharge, replenish and relax,” Griffith wrote.

She also expressed appreciation for the people who supported her throughout the experience.

“I’m so grateful to all of the wonderful doctors, therapists and health practitioners who make the experience so special. -A little heaven on earth. ♥️”

And her fans were quick to notice the difference.

The responses to her post were filled with people complimenting Griffith on appearing happy, peaceful, and radiant.

“You look relaxed and even more beautiful! ❤️,” one person wrote.

Another fan commented, “Lookin’ radiant & serene Sister. ❤️”

Someone else simply wrote, “looking like an angel! ❤️.”

After everything Griffith has shared about aging in Hollywood and her complicated journey with cosmetic procedures, there is something particularly striking about seeing her now concentrating on wellness instead of attempting to reverse the passage of time.

At 69, she appears to be embracing another definition of beauty — one centered on staying healthy, remaining active, and caring for herself.

And judging by the smile in her most recent photographs, she may have discovered a wonderful place to begin.
