Born in Ryan, Oklahoma, Chuck Norris grew up in difficult circumstances, with poverty at home, an unstable family life and his parents’ separation, before the family moved to California. As a young man he lacked confidence and had no clear direction for his future.
That began to change after he joined the United States Air Force in 1958. While stationed in South Korea he started training in Tang Soo Do, a martial art that gave him discipline, focus and a sense of purpose he had not found before.
After leaving the service he opened martial arts schools and built a reputation as a competitor and teacher. A friendship with Bruce Lee opened the door to films, including a memorable appearance in “Way of the Dragon”, and later came action movies and the long-running television series “Walker, Texas Ranger”.
Beyond the screen he supported youth programmes and worked in writing, business and fitness. His story is often told as one of steady self-improvement, strength built step by step over years, rather than success that arrived overnight.
