A quiet puzzle has been fooling almost everyone who looks at it. The scene is a peaceful hospital room: a mother cradling her newborn, a doctor standing nearby, equipment neatly arranged, everything bright and reassuring.

Look closer, though, and something is wrong. On the wall clock, where the numeral 8 should be, there is instead a capital letter B — sitting in plain sight, yet missed by nearly everyone.

Most people miss it for a simple reason: their attention goes straight to the emotionally meaningful parts of the picture — the mother, the baby, the doctor. A clock face is so familiar that nobody scrutinises each character, and the letter B looks so much like an 8 that the eye glides right past it.

It is a neat example of inattentional blindness: missing something visible while focused elsewhere, made worse by familiarity. Spotting the letter is not an intelligence test — it is a reminder to pause, inspect the details, and let them challenge the story our minds assemble from a reassuring first glance.
