The Delivery Driver Who Saved My Son

A working couple had hired a nanny to look after their young son while they were both at work, and for months a delivery driver had been dropping off packages at their home without incident. Then one day the video doorbell’s microphone broke, so the driver could not speak to the mother through it. Instead, he scrawled a warning on a piece of cardboard and held it up to the camera: check your trash can.

Alarmed, the mother phoned the nanny, who insisted everything was fine and the child was asleep after lunch. The parents checked the bin anyway and found discarded medication bottles, including children’s cough medicine, hidden under the rubbish. Inside, they found the nanny downstairs and their son unconscious in his crib, cold to the touch, and the father called for emergency help at once.

Hospital tests showed the child had been exposed to a sedating medicine, and police became involved. The nanny eventually admitted she had been giving the child small doses of medication to force him to sleep at nap time and make her job easier. The driver later explained what he had seen: the nanny carrying a bag to the bin, a medicine bottle falling out — and with the doorbell microphone broken, the cardboard sign was the only warning he could give.

The child recovered, and the parents locked away all medicines and became far more cautious about caregivers. A month later the driver returned with another package; with the doorbell fixed, he asked after the child, and the father told him the boy was well because of him. A stranger’s quick thinking, scribbled on cardboard, had saved their son.
