Flames towered above a Chatsworth parking lot Tuesday evening as firefighters raced toward the wreckage of a fallen news helicopter. Just minutes earlier, NewsChopper4 had been hovering over a deadly collision involving an SUV and a Los Angeles Metro bus. Aboard the aircraft were aerial reporter Eliana Moreno and veteran pilot George Marciniw, two familiar members of NBC4 and Telemundo 52’s news operation. The helicopter went down near North Mason Avenue shortly before 7 p.m. on September 15. Four nearby vehicles and two storage containers were damaged, although authorities had not announced a dollar estimate. More than 50 firefighters responded as thick smoke rose between commercial buildings. Video recorded from the helicopter showed the camera suddenly pulling away from the bus scene as the aircraft appeared to lose altitude. Moreno and Marciniw died in the crash, along with 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, who was on the ground when the helicopter came down. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are examining the aircraft’s flight path, mechanical condition, maintenance records and circumstances surrounding its sudden descent. Investigators have not announced an official cause, and early speculation about mechanical failure has not been confirmed. Their findings could eventually affect insurance claims, an attorney’s review, estate proceedings or possible court action, but no official determination of liability has been released. Unlike a mortgage or financial investment, the human cost of the disaster cannot be calculated on a balance sheet. The earlier bus collision, which killed two people and injured six, also remained under investigation as authorities managed two major crash scenes only a short distance apart.
