Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos thought they had settled comfortably into life as empty nesters, but one unexpected encounter brought a new wave of excitement into their home. After three decades of marriage and raising Michael, Lola, and Joaquin, the couple found themselves preparing to welcome another little companion into their family.
The surprise began on October 12, 2026, when Mark met a tiny rescue dog during an adoption segment on Live with Kelly and Mark. The puppy, a four-month-old Shih Tzu named Lucas, had been rescued from a puppy mill through Pet Rescue NY. As Mark gently held the little dog, something heartwarming happened: the puppy became comfortable enough to fall asleep in his arms.
Kelly immediately noticed how tender her husband looked while cradling the tiny newcomer. The moment was especially meaningful because the couple had previously shared their home with beloved rescue dogs, and they understood how much love an adopted animal could bring into a family.
Their connection with rescue dogs was already deeply personal. They had adopted their Shih Tzu, Chewie, and their dog Lena after the animals appeared on their show. Chewie passed away in February 2025 at the age of 17, leaving a painful absence in the family’s home. Although Kelly and Mark had considered adopting another dog, they needed time before feeling ready to welcome a new companion.
Then came Lucas.
During the television segment, Mark began suggesting a new name for the puppy: Javi, short for Javier. Kelly quickly noticed that her husband was becoming attached, even though they had not yet officially adopted him. Their playful conversation hinted that the little dog might soon become part of their family.
The following day, the couple shared the news viewers had been hoping for: they had decided to adopt Javi.
Kelly described the experience as feeling almost like expecting a baby. She admitted that she was so excited she could barely sleep and had already started preparing their home for the new arrival. However, Javi still needed to complete medical examinations before he could officially move in.
There was also another important introduction to consider: Lena.
The couple arranged a meeting between their existing dog and the new puppy to see how they would respond to one another. Kelly acknowledged that Lena could be cautious around other dogs, but the initial interaction gave them hope. Both she and Mark wanted the two animals to become comfortable together and, eventually, develop a close bond.
Their three grown children—Michael, Lola, and Joaquin—also had opinions about the new arrival. The family found itself debating possible names, with suggestions including Gizmo. Mark and Kelly, however, were determined to make the final decision themselves.
The playful disagreement became another reminder that, even with their children grown, family debates never truly disappear.
For Kelly, Javi’s arrival carried an especially emotional meaning. She reflected on the loss of Chewie and found comfort in the thought that her beloved companion might somehow have guided this new dog into their lives. She understood that adopting another pet could never replace the one they had lost, but it could create space for a different kind of love.
That is what makes this adoption so meaningful. After years of raising children and building a life together, Kelly and Mark are entering a new chapter in which their home can once again be filled with the unpredictable joy of a young animal.
Their story also highlights the importance of rescue and adoption. Javi’s journey began under difficult circumstances, but his future now holds the promise of a loving home, patient care, and a family eager to welcome him.
And while the couple may have expected their empty-nest years to bring a quieter routine, it seems a tiny rescue dog has other plans.
Sometimes, the family members we never expected are the ones who arrive exactly when we need them most. For Kelly and Mark, Javi represents more than a new pet. He is a chance to love again, honor a cherished memory, and discover that the next chapter of family life can be just as beautiful as the ones that came before.
